Weather
Warning System
ACIC provides an early warning to
law enforcement agencies of hazardous weather watches and warnings.
Utilizing a satellite downlink, ACIC
provides an automatic notice to police agencies of watches and warnings issued by the
National Weather Service. The messages are instantly sent out to target counties or
regions of the state. The service makes special weather information available to public
safety agencies immediately.
ACIC provides computerized
communication service to over 1000 terminals located in more than 175 law enforcement and
criminal justice agencies. Within seconds after being received, weather information goes
out over the ACIC statewide network.
This system played a critically
important role in the timely notification to the many communities effected by the severe
outbreak of storms and tornadoes during March of 1997. Because of this system, law
enforcement and other emergency personnel were able to give sufficient warning for
residents to seek shelter. Even though there was a significant loss of property, this
system provided the time necessary to safeguard the loss of human life.
Agencies using the ACIC network can,
at any time, check current weather statements and conditions throughout the state. Should
the information be needed for planning criminal justice activities or to provide the
general public with travel related weather information, the latest National Weather
Service data is readily available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
As
a public service, and in cooperation with KATV
Channel 7, ACIC is providing an active Doppler
radar weather map which will show active weather systems as they
progress across the state.
